How does advertising work for the recording and movie industry?

Technically, the recording and movie industry do not generate their income through advertising, so how does advertising work for them?

In a way they do generate their income that way. By advertising, there are usually two benefactors: the product being advertised and the sponsor of the advertisement.

The sponsor is given credit for the advertisement in hopes that people will buy THEIR product, and often they do.
The recording or movie industry is putting their product out there, so it is likely to be bought by consumers as well.

Without advertisements, a product would never be seen and therefore never purchased by consumers.

What marketing strategy can I use to sell a higher quality but more expensive product?

I need to set up a marketing strategy to sell a very durable and reliable desk drawer slide for $8.75 when there is a competitor selling a cheaper less reliable version for only $1.75– obviously my product is better, but how do I stress that to customers and get them to pay this high price?

To market in terms of quality rather than price, and in order to differentiate accordingly, you need to follow the standard format of the 4 P’s marketing plan. That is, Price, Product, Place and Promotion – obviously you know the main attributes of the product, and the price, but for ‘place’ you should think about the type of people who are willing to pay over 4x price of competing product – whereas the cheap option may be sold where emphasis is on cost, your product will be suited to places/distributors where the customers will be willing to pay for quality. Promotion needs to concentrate on the unique selling point / differentiator of the product you are selling, so this would be promotion through media (the choice of which depends on place – ie internet, leaflets, direct sales force, tv etc etc) with a strong emphasis on the reliability, durability and quality of the desk drawer slide – heavily focussing on the life of the product compared to cheaper ones; a ‘lifespan’ comparison could show the cheaper one to be a false economy both in cost and effort of replacement, so this could communicate it quite well.

I’m trying to decide how to build my website. I don’t have any experience programming so I want to use a GUI. I keep reading about HTML editors and CMS but I don’t quite understand the difference. I would appreciate some helpful input. Thanks.

well, HTML editors are designed to help you make HTML pages using user friendly interface. But then, you must take all your HTML work and upload it to a website so that others can see it.

The CMS is a more advanced way of creating websites. It has its own HTML editor. But also it defines areas within the HTML page were a normal user can edit in the future without knowing much about HTML language nor the uploading process to the server. In other word, the CMS is a program that manages your website and allow people (your co-workers) to edit special regions within the HTML. That’s why it is called "Content Editor". We have a CMS at work where different departments connect to their pages to edit the contents and update it.

Not if the search engines catch you. Than bad things will happen to your search ranking.

In my experience, It’s much more effective to simply blog (v6transition.com) about your site and to have a facebook (facebook.com) account for your site.
