The Pittsburg Chamber of Commerce welcomes the public to attend its annual State of Education Breakfast at the Pittsburg Yacht Club from 8:30AM to 10:30AM on Wednesday, February 22. The focus of the State of Education Breakfast is to inform the Pittsburg business community about ongoing initiatives and pressing issues faced by today’s educators.
The Pittsburg Chamber of Commerce understands the value of an educated workforce and recognizes that business can impact schools in order to build a better future for the community. The Breakfast is designed to facilitate meaningful discourse on the topic and features guest speakers from several facets of education in Pittsburg.
“Come join us for this eye opening event,” invites Monica Couture, Director of Operations of the Pittsburg Chamber of Commerce. “You don’t want to miss it.”
This year, guest speakers include Dr. Joseph A. Ovick, Ed.D, Contra Costa County Superintendent of Schools; Richard Livingston, Interim President of Los Medanos College; Linda Rondeau, Superintendent of the Pittsburg Unified School District; and Bob Peck, Principal of Pittsburg Adult Education.
The panel has been selected to provide a look at different sectors of education in Pittsburg, including both private and public school options for elementary and secondary education, as well as higher education.

ABSTRACT Structured search is about giving the search engine a deeper understanding of documents and queries and how they relate to real-world entities. Using this knowledge, we can build search products that lead users directly to their answers, or assemble disparate data into a more unified interface that helps users make better decisions. This talk will present a variety of ways in which a better understanding of structure and semantics is helping Google push the boundaries of search. Andrew Hogue is a Senior Staff Engineer and Engineering Manager in the Search Quality group at Google New York. He has worked on a wide array of projects including question answering, Google Squared, sentiment analysis, local and product search, and Google Goggles. His is interested in the areas of structured data, information extraction, and machine learning, and their applications to search and search interfaces. Prior to Google, he earned a M.Eng. and BS in Computer Science from MIT. This Tech Talk was presented at one of the Google NYC Tech Talk series. The Speaking of Wealth podcast took on one of the biggest questions in business today during its 43rd episode: how to use Facebook to make money? Social media marketing expert Brian Carter joined Speaking of Wealth to discuss search engine optimization, social media, Google Adwords, relationship building and converting clicks to sales.
Carter says he fell into professional Search Engine Optimization (SEO) while studying acupuncture. “I did freelance for a while, doing Adwords and SEO for medium-sized companies and small businesses,” said Carter. “After that, I moved to South Carolina and started working for an agency that does a lot of hotel promotions.” His initial experience with Search Engine Optimization came through Google Adwords. However, as time went on, he became fascinated with Facebook—just as many businesses are now. Except, how discovered that many businesses don’t know how to use Facebook effectively.
“Facebook marketing is trying to capture an audience the same way you capture an email audience. Once that’s done, you market it over and over,” he said. “With search marketing and Adwords, people try to get people when they’re ready to buy. You have to think of Facebook marketing like email. You have to capture the audience and then engage them.”
As a social networking tool, Facebook isn’t likely to generate a lot of immediate sales. The avid marketer needs to have a plan. “You need to have the right people and then you have to have a strategy for whatever the goal is you have for them,” said Carter. “I think we’re not totally there yet. A lot of people don’t know how quite to use it yet. Using Facebook in marketing is about building relationships.”
He continued by relating some hard facts about Facebook fan pages. “Around twenty percent of your fans are seeing your posts. People don’t realize that,” commented Carter. “How are you going to make any money if you aren’t even visible? It’s a multi-step thing. You have to capture an audience first, then engage them before you try and sell anything.”
Carter’s biggest tip for engaging fans is to put a call to action in fan page updates: this is the “click like if you like ‘blank’” philosophy. His next tip is to build the page around the demographic. “When you attract people on Facebook, you’re typically doing it with something they’re already interested in,” continued Carter. “Let’s say it’s somebody that wants to make money at home. You track people who want to work at home. Sell the dream, the opportunity for free time, to live the good life. Tell them to click ‘like’ if you want luxury. Build your page around your target audience’s biggest passion. You’ll have higher click rates.”
The key to anything relating to Facebook is engagement, then relationship building. That’s the only way to get customers to take out their wallets.
