Because some agencies, like the one I work for, do not allow EMT’s to call a death on a trauma pt. unless there is 1. decapitation. 2 decomposition. 3. rigor mortis. or 4 lividity. other than that we must work the code untill medical control gives us the ok to stop, but that’s usually after we get to the hospital.

That is crazy – if the pt. is asystolic, the outcome has been found to be 0% survival rate. And it really doesn’t look like they were bothering anyway – the compressions were sloppy as they were putting him on the aircraft, and there were periods of at least 20 seconds of no (or very poor) ECCs anyway: which is unacceptable by any standards. No offence to the EMTs: They knew he was dead.
